About Families Helping Families Inc.

In the early 90’s, families partnered with the Louisiana Developmental Disabilities Council to be the driving force that founded & formed Families Helping Families (FHF) of Louisiana. It all began at a conference sponsored by the Louisiana Developmental Disabilities Council in 1988 that focused on community supports and services for people with disabilities. The conference was attended by many young parents, who wanted to have full inclusion for their children with disabilities, in the communities where they livedFamilies Helping Families of Louisiana and worked.

During the wrap up portion of the conference one parent asked that the flip chart full of great ideas serve a purpose besides covering the walls. The Louisiana Developmental Disabilities Council took the challenge and began pilot projects and gathered information to write the legislation that created Act 378 of 1989 known as the Community and Family Support Act.

While each center is regionally based and therefore different in flavor, each Families Helping Families center is able to maintain its mission and vision by being a member of Families Helping Families of Louisiana.  There are ten independent non-profit resource centers. Each center is independently incorporated and governed by its own Board of Directors. The staff and Board of each center is shriners-hospitalscomprised of family members and individuals with disabilities.

Families Helping Families of Louisiana, Inc., a non-profit organization, is a network of families in Louisiana who, because of their own experiences, became committed to reaching out to other individuals with disabilities and their families. Disabilities include physical, mental, emotional, behavioral, and/or learning disabilities.

This is a place where families can go for help that is guided by parents of individuals with disabilities and individuals with disabilities themselves. Their mission is to assist and strengthen individuals and families through a parent driven, coordinated network of services. Caring for individuals with disabilities takes a wealth of support, knowledge and information. Connecting with others who have similar experiences gives families first hand information and encouragement.
