Pediatric Massage: Highlighting Autism & ADD/ADHD | 8am – 12pm
Children are diagnosed at an ever growing rate with one of many developmental disorders that include autism, and ADD/ADHD.
Currently, 1 in every 88 children ages 3 -17 years in the United States is estimated to have an autism spectrum disorder.
The cost of a child’s lifelong care can be reduced by as much as two-thirds, when appropriate interventions are put in place, such as the therapeutic intervention of pediatric massage therapy.
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate pediatric massage and nurturing touch techniques.
- Describe many benefits of pediatric massage for children affected by ASD and relevant research facts.
- Describe indications for, and where to use, pediatric massage.
- Describe information on how to receive training in pediatric massage therapy and specialize in working with children affected by ASD.

Pediatric Massage: Highlighting Cerebral Palsy | 1:30pm – 5:30pm
Cerebral Palsy (CP) comes in different forms and in essence different severities.
CP is a non-progressive disease with no cure. Research has demonstrated that when pediatric massage therapy is applied benefits include; reduced spasticity, less rigid muscle tone, and improved fine and gross motor functioning.
These findings suggest that massage therapy is effective and should be considered as an early intervention therapy for children affected by Cerebral Palsy..

About the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA):
The American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) is the largest non-profit, professional association serving massage therapists, massage students and massage schools, with more than 56,000 members.
AMTA provides our members with the strongest benefits in the profession. We promote massage to the public, the healthcare community, and other important groups. We work for fair licensing of massage in all states, and actively support research. Your voice is heard in AMTA as we are governed by massage therapists. And, we provide a wealth of local and national networking and continuing education opportunities.
Mission Statement: To serve AMTA members while advancing the art, science and practice of massage therapy.
AMTA’s growth in membership was profound from the ‘80s into the 21st century. In 1980, AMTA had only 1,400 members, but grew to 8,500 by 1990. Today, AMTA has approximately 57,000 members.
About the AMTA Convention:
Like its membership, the association’s annual national convention grew in size and importance. From the handful of people who formed the association at its first convention in 1943, attendance grew to an all-time high in 2009 of 1,800, with more than 90 exhibitors and 25 continuing education presenters.
In 2008, a special Student Day was added to the national convention, giving massage school students opportunities to learn more about “kick-starting” their practices. In its second year, the number of participants in Student Day more than doubled.
